What Goes Inside an Alexreyn Sofa — And Why It Matters

Most people choose a sofa for how it looks. We think about how it's built as well.

The fabrics, the frame, the fillings, everything hidden beneath the surface, determine whether a piece of furniture lasts five years or fifty. At Alexreyn, the materials we select are chosen with the same care as the designs themselves. Not because it makes a good story, but because it makes a better sofa.

Here's what goes inside, and why we chose it.

The Frame: Sustainably Sourced Timber

Every Alexreyn sofa begins with a hardwood frame. We use beech and birch, sourced exclusively from responsibly managed forests. Timbers are chosen for their strength, stability, and the simple fact that they can be harvested without depleting the forests from which they come.

A sofa is only as good as what holds it together. Hardwood frames don't creak, warp, or collapse. They last. Which is exactly the point.

The Fillings: Two Approaches, One Standard

We offer two approaches to the interiors, sustainable and natural, depending on the collection. Both are chosen for the same reason: they perform better, last longer, and sit more honestly in the world than the alternatives.

Our Sustainable Fillings

Quallofil® Blue cushion interiors are made from 100% recycled polyester fibre, with 50% of that being Prevented Ocean Plastic™ — material recovered from coastlines and waterways before it reaches the sea. It's a filling that gives you exceptional comfort and gives something back at the same time.

Ultraflex® foam alternative is our alternative to conventional PU foam, and in almost every way, it's superior. It's inherently flame-resistant, which means no chemical treatments are needed to meet fire safety standards. It carries an ultra-low VOC rating, making it healthier for the air inside your home. It's made from recycled polyester, including single-use plastic bottles. And when your sofa eventually reaches the end of its life, decades from now, the foam itself can be recycled. A genuinely circular material, not just a marketed one.

Our Natural Fillings

Hairlok® is one of those materials that sounds unusual until you understand it — and then you wonder why anyone uses anything else. Natural hair fibres are spun into ropes, forming thousands of tiny micro-springs. Those ropes are then formed into sheets and finished with natural latex — a fully renewable material tapped from rubber trees — which gives the filling its structure and resilience.

The result is a seat that holds its shape over time, doesn't flatten, and requires no synthetic chemicals whatsoever. Natural latex is also inherently hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and dust-mite-resistant — making it an excellent choice for allergy sufferers without any additional treatment.

Woolsafe® barrier cloth sits between the upholstery fabric and the furniture base — invisible in the finished piece, but doing important work. It's a heavy-quality wool felt that meets British fire safety standards without the chemical flame retardants typically used in synthetic alternatives. Wool is inherently fire-resistant. It always has been. We use that fact rather than working around it.

Natural hessian replaces the synthetic base cloth typically used in upholstered furniture. Derived from the jute plant, it's biodegradable, breathable, and far more considered than the man-made alternative it replaces. A small detail — but one that matters when you're thinking about every layer.

Why This All Matters

We could use cheaper fillings. Most furniture brands do. Conventional PU foam, synthetic fire retardants, and virgin polyester. The reality is they're widely available, inexpensive, and entirely unremarkable.

We choose not to, for two reasons.

The first is quality. The materials above perform better. They last longer, hold their shape more faithfully, and age more gracefully than the alternatives.

The second is honesty. We build sofas that we're proud to stand behind — with a lifetime frame guarantee and a genuine commitment to materials that do no unnecessary harm. That commitment runs from the hardwood at the base to the fabric on the surface, and everything in between.

A sofa is the most used piece of furniture in your home. It deserves to be made properly.
